Stress is Fear In Disguise

stressWhat happens when you take care of yourself?

When you deeply, radically take care of yourself?

When you take an hour a day to meditate, to take a bath, to be calm, to listen to your deepest inner needs and wishes?

Stress lessens. That is what happens. But on a deeper level, the fear of NOT BEING ENOUGH goes away. You realize that you are enough and the world is skewed and messed up and that is what keeps telling you that you are not enough. That voice in your head is manufactured – a product of the media and negative energy in this world. The negative energy is perpetuated by the media and the constant bombardment of messages that tell us that we are not enough.

A simple example of this is Pintrest. I have spent hours upon hours on pintrest. I can admit that it is total escapism. I have found good recipes, great oil tips and amazing decorating ideas on there. But mostly, it is escapism – that eventually stresses me out because I FEAR that I am not living up to the weird, manufactured, expectations of non-existant people on pintrest. Does this ring true to anyone else, or am I losing my marbles?

I bet that I am actually pretty sane and that my sanity is becoming clearer as I keep examining the chronic stress/fear/guilt cycle in the world.

When I beat the drum of self-care I whole heartedly believe that it can change the world if we take care of ourselves. Less stress, less fear, less consumerism, less ADDICTION to food, internet, TV, drugs, alcohol, gossip, chaos…

More present awareness, more love, more peace, more nature

Think for a minute that YOU ARE ENOUGH. Yes, you. Throw all of the negative words like boasting, bragging, egotistical, stupid, crazy, etc… out of your vocab for a minute. Suspend your disbelief in yourself!

Repeat after me, close your eyes and say: I AM ENOUGH. I am more than enough, I am actually amazing and I am doing a good job at this life thing.

How do you feel? Did that feel good? Did you feel fear? Where did that fear come from if so? Did you feel peace? Where did that peace come from if so?

I want to talk about this topic a LOT – A LOT. Help me keep the conversation going by commenting, asking questions and experimenting with radical self care and telling others of the results. Be the light.

Much love,

Heather

Be Kinder Than Necessary

be kinder than necessaryOne of my best friends signs all of her emails with this beautiful statement. What if we were all kinder than necessary, wouldn’t that make the world a much better place? Imagine with me a world where people let you go first in line, let you have that parking space, smiled at you in the grocery store and listened to you with their full attention.

Eye contact.
Attention.
Smiles.
Manners.

I am not talking about huge gestures (although those are good too) to really wow someone with your kindness. Generous gifts and well thought out sentiments have their place, but that puts pressure on us to be kind in that way all the time. It is almost as if simple manners and smiles are not as impactful.

I would argue that small acts of kindness are actually more important. Creating an environment for kindness and love to flourish while you are standing in line at the post office is actually more profound than giving someone a lavish birthday gift in my opinion.

How can we as a thoughtful community create an environment where love and peace can flourish even in the dullest of circumstances?

Eye contact.
Attention.
Smiles.
Manners.

For the love, please be especially kind to those in the service industry. Do you know how demeaning it is to be a server in a nice restaurant some nights? I do. Some people look down their noses at you because you are a waitress. It is not nice and it is not a good feeling. So, tip your servers well and smile at the cashier at the grocery store – it might make their day. THEN what is so awesome, that if they are in a better mood, then the next person they run into might be in a better mood because of their energy.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. How can we make the world a better place in our homes, at the store or at the post office? Hit me up with your ideas.

Peace,

Heather

PS – thanks Stacy for always being so kind. 🙂

Benefits of Rosemary Oil

I love rosemary. I always have it growing in my garden. I love those pictures of older homes in Europe where they have tons of rosemary and lavender growing in their yard instead of boring box hedges. Useful plants make more sense to me in a yard then just an ornamental.
Anyway… I digress.

Gluten Free Chocolate Mug Cake

Happy November! It is officially the kick off to the holiday season and the season for sugary treats EVERYWHERE. In your kids room (they hid 1/2 of their chocolate Halloween candy from you), in the office, in the dish on the counter, at every gathering… candy, cookies, sugary cocktails… shuga is everywhere.

Fact: Sugar makes you fat, not fat. Eat good fats and avoid sugar and you will lose weight.

How in the world are you supposed to avoid eating sweets when there are mini candy bars laying around everywhere?

My suggestion? Eat more sweets.

Shocked?

I am not suggesting that you eat more candy, I want you to try eating sweet potatoes, butternut squash, and protein packed mug cakes. Eat these guys early in the day and your sweet tooth that hijacks your brain at night will chill out. I also suggest using stevia in your hot tea and coffee. I also LOVE dark chocolate. I eat dark chocolate all the time. I just grab one square and I am done with it after that. I could sit there and eat all of it, but I set a limit on myself and stick to it.

I am currently obsessed with making mug cakes. I am eating one now for breakfast. Protein packed, gluten free, chocolate cake for breakfast? Yes please!

Gluten Free Chocolate Mug Cake:

1/3 Cup Almond Flour
1 TBS Coconut Flour
1/4 Tsp Baking Soda
1 Egg
2 TBS Cashew or Almond Milk
2 TBS Apple Sauce
1 TBS Honey
1/2 Tsp Coconut Oil (Melted)
1/2 Tsp Vanilla (organic)
10 Drops Stevia
2 TBS Cocoa

Combine all the ingredients in a big mug, mix with a fork and microwave for 2 – 3 minutes.

Lemon Oil – The Oil of Cleansing and Focus

lemon, essential oils, cleanse, detox, nontoxic, non-toxic, all natural, therapeutic, seasons, back to school, mom, work from home, momtrepreneuer, granola mom, soccer mom, cleaning, DIY

Fresh, clean, yummy lemon. There is good reason we have used it to clean our homes for many moons. The delightful citrusy aroma of lemon nourishes the mind and purifies surfaces. All citrus oils make you happy, and I need more of that when I am cleaning. I need more happy while I’m scrubbing the toothpaste off of the mirror. How does that get there anyway????

Lemon also helps with concentration (another thing I need more of in my life). Lemon restores energy, mental flexibility and the drive to complete a project. If you diffuse it with rosemary or frankincense during study time, everybody will be more focused and happier. Lemon is a wonderful aid for kids who struggle to stay on task. It helps us to be mentally present to one task at a time. Multi-tasking is not actually efficient in getting more accomplished – no matter what you have been told by your boss. Do one thing, do it well, get it done and move on.

Here are my top 10 uses for pure, therapeutic grade lemon oil:

  1. Diffuse with other citrus oils or peppermint to boost mood
  2. Diffuse with rosemary and/or frankincense to aid in concentration
  3. Drink (only therapeutic grade, GRAS) in water daily to gently detox
  4. Rub over liver and drink lemon oil after drinking alcoholic beverages
  5. Use with peppermint and lavender to assist with seasonal discomfort
  6. Add 2 – 3 drops to pasta or any favorite recipe that calls for fresh lemon (therapeutic grade only for internal use)
  7. Add several drops to olive oil to polish wood
  8. Drop several drops onto a clean cloth and polish stainless steel
  9. Apply topically over heart and on big toe to reduce feelings of sadness and to boost self esteem
  10. Gargle 2 – 3 drops of lemon with about 4 oz of water to sooth an irritated throat

    BONUS TIP!

  11. Add a drop or two to honey to soothe an irritated throat and to support the respiratory system

What Oils Do You Need For Back To School?

Ohmygosh. Is it really that time again? Already? I am not ready. I want to hang on to this summer forever. I do crave a regular schedule, but other than that, I don’t want this summer to end. She is growing up way too fast, and she is in Middle School. Need I say more? I am very grateful for our amazing school counselors who can navigate this dramatic time of her life with grace. I just want to scream “enough with the drama!!!!” but by the grace of God, I keep my mouth shut (most of the time).

Essential oils do make the transition back to school easier. Teachers can even use them in their classrooms, so if you have an opportunity to talk to your kids’ teachers about using oils in a diffuser give it a shot. Most schools are OK with diffusers in the classroom. If the teacher can have a toxic plug in, they should be able to have a diffuser. clove oil, back to school, immunity, antioxidant, natural health

I am using the protective blend daily and starting to diffuse it so we can boost our immune systems. Put it on your feet and on your kids feet at night. I am also making sure she takes her vitamins and omegas every day. Did you know that omega 3s are good for brain health? So it only makes sense to really get into the routine of using omegas for kids before school begins. focus, back to school, essential oils, focus blend

For attention issues you can use the focus blend that includes Sandalwood, Frank, Lime, Ylang Ylang, and Chamomile. This turns scattered brain into a focused brain. I use it when I need to sit down and write a blog but 1,000 other things are calling my name! Hello laundry… yes I hear you, but I need to focus on this right now 😉

For mood and sleeplessness I would use lavender, wild orange and grounding blend. If you put the grounding blend on their feet daily then you will set them up to be focused and grounded during those stressful days at school. If anybody is having trouble sleeping, use lavender and wild orange in a diffuser. Works like a charm! lavender, natural health, france, belugium, essential oils, calm, peace, sleep, insomnia

Let me know if you have any questions.

Good luck out there! Play nice and stay safe.

xoxo,

Heather

Peaches and Coconut Cream with Walnuts

breakfast, fruit, organic, non-gmo, coconut, vegan, nuts, nomnom, produce, freshI love mornings where I have time to sit on my back porch, enjoy the birds, listen to nothing but the sounds of nature and just sit. I personally think that we all spend too much time around electronics and not enough time around trees. It is really nice to unplug on occasion and I grant you the permission to do so today, or tomorrow… not that you need my permission, but maybe it will make you feel better about it. 😉

My breakfast this morning was divine, and simple. Isn’t it funny that the simplest things are often the most divine? I had some cut up peaches and plums that I had delivered last week to my house by an organic farmer. (This new service is such a blessing!)It took them a couple of days to fully ripen and now they are super juicy and sweet. I topped them with some coconut cream and walnuts. The coconut cream is an easy substitute for whipped cream on any dessert where the flavor of coconut would not clash. (I’m thinking key lime pie! holla!) I also use it on my dairy free chocolate pot de creme. The recipe for coconut cream could not be easier. breakfast, fruit, organic, non-gmo, coconut, vegan, nuts, nomnom, produce, fresh

Coconut Cream:

1 can of full fat coconut milk, stored in the fridge over night (Thai Kitchen brand is my favorite)
1 teaspoon of coconut sugar (or about 10-15 drops of stevia if you want it sugar free)
1/8 teaspoon of vanilla (I don’t measure this, I just put a drop in there, less is more here)

Refrigerate the coconut milk over night. Open the can carefully the day you are going to use it, make sure you do not shake it. The cream will rise to the top and the bottom will have some liquid left over. Grab a small bowl and scoop out the top part of the can of coconut milk, it should be most of the can with just a little liquid in the bottom. Add the vanilla and sugar. Lightly stir together. You can use it right away, but it is better if placed back in the refrigerator for at least an hour to firm back up.

Use this to top fruit for a guilt free desert or breakfast.

Notes: If you want a pretty white cream for a dessert, use regular organic white sugar or stevia. The coconut sugar will turn it a golden brown.

The Magic Elixir

I swear by this concoction of oils my friend Mindy came up with. I was suffering with a two day head “tension” nightmare that would not quit. Mindy suggested I drink this awesome blend of oils, hot water and honey.

It worked. Melted all that tension away, I could breathe and my tummy felt better. The stress melted from my shoulders and I just felt 1000% better.

Next time you are feeling less than magical, try Mindy’s Magic Elixir.

essential oils, magic, peppermint, honey, ginger, lemon, hangover, granola mom, natural health

PS – Works great if you had a few too many cocktails too! 😉

xoxo,

Heather
